BYU set to draw largest football crowd in Nevada history

LAS VEGAS — It’s first, but third for BYU and Arizona Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium. The inaugural Vegas Kickoff Classic (8:30 p.m., ESPN) is expected to draw the biggest football crowd in Nevada history — approximately 57,000 tickets have been sold.

The current record was set Aug. 14 when the Las Vegas Raiders drew a crowd of 50,101 for an exhibition game against the Seattle Seahawks. It marked the first time the new 65,000-seat venue allowed fans to attend after missing last season because of the pandemic. A formal ribbon-cutting gathering featured the national anthem by Marie Osmond and a halftime show starring Carlos Santana.

Before BYU and Arizona take the field this weekend, though, UNLV is hosting Eastern Washington in a special Thursday night contest. No attendance records are expected to fall.

BYU and Oregon set the Nevada state mark for college football attendance when 44,615 fans crammed into Sam Boyd Stadium for the 2016 Las Vegas Bowl.
