BYU, Utah State headed to National Invitational Tournament as first-round hosts

The NIT is back to a 32-team format for the first time since 2019 and both the BYU Cougars and Utah State Aggies have been included in the bunch.

After missing out on the NCAA Tournament thanks to a disappointing loss to San Francisco in the West Coast Conference tournament earlier this week, BYU will settle for a postseason appearance in the National Invitational Tournament.

As a 2-seed, the Cougars are slated to host Long Beach State at the Marriott Center in Provo. With a win, BYU would face the winner of Saint Louis and Northern Iowa.

Considered a Bubble Team, and needing a strong showing in the conference tournament to get into the Big Dance, the Cougars wilted with a 75-63 loss to San Francisco, which did get into the Dance, to finish their season with a 22-10 record.

Long Beach State holds a record of 20-13 and was the Big West Conference regular-season champion.

With an 18-15 Utah State didn’t sniff a bid into the NCAA Tournament under first-year head coach Ryan Odom. Still after a narrow loss to Mountain West Champion Colorado State in the conference tourney, the Aggies will get a chance to introduce the Oregon Ducks to a bit of Spectrum Magic as a first-round host.

Typically a power in Pac-12 play, Oregon finished the 2022 campaign with a 19-14 record.
