BYU falls to Florida State in title game decided by penalty kicks

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — It ended with a heartbreaking 4-3 decision in penalty kicks. After playing Florida State to a scoreless draw that’s how the national championship game was ultimately decided.

“It was a great game and a great Final Four here this weekend,” BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said “We are grateful for the opportunity we had to play here, and I am really proud of our players and our team. We battled hard, and we have had a phenomenal year. Really proud of the way we competed tonight and the way we represented ourselves, our school and our conference.”

NATIONAL SEMIFINALS: BYU earned a trip to the national championship game for the first after prevailing in a shootout against defending champion Santa Clara.

The Cougars advanced with a 3-2 advantage in the decisive sequence after playing the Broncos to a scoreless draw in regulation.

Oliva Wade scored what proved to be the game-winner. Santa Clara’s final attempt hit the post.

A second-half goal by Jaelin Howell lifted Florida State to a 1-0 victory over Rutgers in the other semifinal.

The NCAA title will be decided Monday (6 p.m., ESPNU) with No. 13 BYU traveling to top-ranked Florida State for the College Cup. The Cougars lead the nation with 3.5 goals per game.
