GREAT SALT TAKES: Are the J-E-T-S a good fit for Z-A-C-H?

Each week, our friends and local sports experts weigh in on a different topic. This week the question is how will former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson fare if the New York Jets select him with the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL Draft?

“I think one thing that isn’t being talked about is how challenging it is to be a professional athlete in New York. Those fans and media are so brutal. There’s a huge difference between being the cool guy from Draper, Utah and being the QB of the New York Jets. There’s going to be incredible pressure and scrutiny. I’m curious to see how Wilson fares in that environment. Any bad play is going to be amplified in the the New York market.”

“Wilson’s stock is high and the bottom line is the bottom line. He’ll be compensated well and get to play on the big stage. Good for him. While there is a lot to handle, WIlson appears capable of getting the job done. Question is, how messed up is the organization and are the Jets really dedicated to putting a winning product on the field. One man, especially a young buck, can’t do it alone.”

“It’s a huge market. The Jets are a crappy team and I feel bad for Zach Wilson — because as much as I like the kid and as much as I like watching him play and I appreciate what he can do, I just don’t know that he’s going to turn around a team like the Jets. It’s going to take way more than that. At this point, that’s just a bad organization and it’s my hope that maybe, somehow, he ends up going somewhere else.”

“I think it’s going to be rough year one. I can definitely see that happening. But if you give Zach Wilson a little bit of time to get used to it, to develop, I think the Jets are heading in the right direction where he’ll get a real shot within the next one to two years. I think he can do good things in the NFL. I really do.”
