GREAT SALT TAKES: Should Utah play more in-state basketball games?

Utah’s new head basketball coach, Craig Smith, has said that improving the program’s schedule is a top priority. Would playing more games against in-state schools help his cause?

Our friends and local experts weigh in:

“If you could promise me that it wouldn’t have the sterile and not-fun feel of the ill-fated Beehive Classic, I would say definitely yes. Utah should be playing these games in its own gym. I think the Huntsman Center deserves to be the Mecca of college basketball in the state of Utah. Hopefully it’ll be a place where the players at Utah State and Weber State look forward to playing every year in the future.”

“Absolutely. If nothing else, it generates more local interest in college basketball. The state’s love of the sport should be on display and not something to be avoided because of competitive fears or politics.”

JIM BURTON

“I kind of long for those days when college basketball just had a different feel to it around here. And a lot of it has to do with teams not playing.”

“That’s how you get better is by testing your players and testing your teams with tough competition.”
