RIVALRY WEEK: BYU, Utah players discuss Saturday’s game

PROVO — Rivalry Week continues with players from both BYU and Utah weighing in on Saturday’s game (8:15 p.m., ESPN) at LaVell Edwards Stadium.

BYU OFFENSIVE LINEMAN JAMES EMPEY

On the difference between playing Utah and any other team . . .

“I’d say the biggest thing that changes is just the hype leading up to the game. There’s lots of hype being the rivalry game. A lot of times you’re playing against somebody you’ve grown up around or a local team you’ve been around a lot. Once the ball snaps, it’s a football game and you’re going to work and just trying to get your work done the best you can. I’m super excited about this week and ready to go.”

On facing Utah’s defense . . .

“They have a really strong front seven. They have a lot of strong players and a lot of big defensive linemen. We definitely have our work cut out for us, but we love the challenge and we’re ready to hit the ground running, get going in film, get going in practice, and look forward to the game this week.”

BYU QUARTERBACK JAREN HALL

On the Cougars . . .

“We’ve got to start faster, you know, get points on the board. That’s what we’re out there to do so. We have to be comfortable and have more energy right from the get-go, get after it, trust the game plan and really just making plays.”

On recent history in the rivalry . . .

“The only thing in the past is the past, and we look forward. For us now, it’s just looking forward to this next game. That’s what we can control. We can’t change the outcome of the past, but we can prepare our best for Saturday and that’s what we’re going to do.”

BYU DEFENSIVE LINEMAN TYLER BATTY

On the rivalry . . .

“It’s definitely one of the most anticipated games each season. It’s intense, it’s exciting, it’s pretty much everything you could want in a football game.”

UTAH WIDE RECEIVER BRITAIN COVEY

On whether the rivalry gets old for the former Timpview High star . . .

“No, but it’s funny how just the attitude toward it has changed over the last few years. I see a lot of my family members totally at war with themselves not knowing what to do. It’s been fun. I live, literally, 30 seconds from the stadium. My whole family still has season tickets to BYU. They also have season tickets to Utah now. So, you know, it’s close to home.”

On respect between the Utes and Cougars . . .

“I think it’s more the fans that kind of get into it. The players, like, there’s nothing but respect and that’s when it gets easier to appreciate the rivalry in a different way — when you start to get to know players on the other team. When you’re kind of looking at them as a big entity like BYU football or Utah football it’s easy to kind of generalize it.”

On speaking to Baylor transfer Charlie Brewer about the rivalry . . .

“We’re sitting him down and talking to him about it . . . There’s a lot more at stake here than just a game, right? I think that you’re fooling yourself if you just say it’s just another game. It’s not, you know. It doesn’t mean it’s the Super Bowl but it’s a big game. We respect BYU. They respect us. We know they’re going to play their best game. We know we’re going to play our best game . . .  I think what people don’t know about the (game), especially people from the East, is they don’t really understand that it’s one of the biggest rivalries in the country and you kid of go through and tell them about that and it makes it fun.”

UTAH QUARTERBACK CHARLIE BREWER

On what he knows about the rivalry . . .

“I learned it’s a really big game. People have just said how great of an atmosphere, how much it means to the people up here, so I’m excited to be able to play in it.”

On understanding the rivalry with BYU . . .

“For past players and things like that, it’s probably an important game — a lot is on the line. I’m learning every day the significance of it and I think I’ll know it pretty well by game time.”

On discussing the opportunity for Utah’s 10th straight win over BYU . . .

“Just the significance of the game is talked about, but . . . our main focus is being as prepared as possible for the game. There’s a lot of things that go into it with film and practice. And I think for us, just being as prepared as possible will give us the best chance to do that. I think more of our focus is just one, you know, getting prepared and playing as well as we can.”
